چکیده

A great amount of radioactive concrete waste was produced from the decontamination and decommissioning of a research reactor and uranium conversion plant at KAERI. To reduce the volume of concrete waste, a separation technology of porous fine cement paste from the gravel and aggregate in concrete through a thermal and mechanical treatment was developed [1]. However, since some gravel and aggregates still have higher radioactivity than the limited value for self-disposal, they have to be washed by appropriate decontamination reagents. Carbonate, because of its ability to be recycled and its tendency to have great selectivity for uranium, was observed to be an effective way to remove uranium from uranium-contaminated soil [2]. However, the use of carbonate for the decontamination of concrete has been little reported. Strong acids have been used to wash soil contaminated with radioactive nuclides. In this study, carbonate solution, nitric acid and sulfuric acid were used for the extraction of uranium from the concrete contaminated with uranium, and their efficiencies are compared to one another. In addition, the amount of waste sludge produced from the using these extractants was also evaluated.

Response of Hanford Site Soil Arthrobacter Isolates to Uranium Contamination

Uranium is one of the most prevalent radiological groundwater and soil contaminants at Hanford, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) site, Washington State, USA. Bioremediation strategies, such as injections of a soluble sodium tripolyphosphate amendment into the contaminated groundwater in order to sequester uranium through the formation of insoluble uranyl phosphate minerals, may have resulted...

Electrokinetic Remediation of Uranium Contaminated Soil by Ion Exchange Membranes

Abstract—The contamination of significant quantities of soils and sediments with uranium and other actinide elements as a result of nuclear activity poses many environmental risks. The electrokinetic process is one of the most promising remediation techniques for sludge, sediment, and saturated or unsaturated soils contaminated with heavy metals and radionuclides. However, secondary waste is a ...

Microbial Transformations of Uranium Complexed with Organic and Inorganic Ligands

Biotransformation of various chemical forms of uranium present in wastes, contaminated soils and materials by microorganisms under different process conditions such as aerobic and anaerobic (denitrifying, iron-reducing, fermentative, and sulfate-reducing) conditions will affect the solubility, bioavailability, and mobility of uranium in the natural environment. Fundamental understanding of the ...

Biotransformation of uranium and other actinides in radioactive wastes

Microorganisms affect the solubility, bioavailability, and mobility of actinides in radioactive wastes. Under appropriate conditions, actinides are solubilized or stabilized by the direct enzymatic or indirect nonenzymatic actions of microorganisms. Biotransformation of various forms of uranium (ionic, inorganic, and organic complexes) by aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms has been extensivel...
